Savitri Medhatul is a Mumbai based Theatre Producer, Director and Documentary filmmaker. She is co founder & artistic director of Kali Billi Productions.
She worked with Junoon and Arts organisation founded by Sanjna Kapoor and Sameera Iyengar.
Is currently a recipient of a fellowship from University of Edinburgh.
An active member of Mumbai theatre circuit Savitri has worked with Sunil Shanbag, Akarsh Khurana, Vaman Kendre, and Geetanjali Kulkarni.
In 2015 Savitri and Bhushan Korgaonkar (co producer Natale Tumchyasathi) have designed a theatre production Sangeet Bari. This production is based on their research and the book written by Bhushan Korgaonkar. Using the form of Documentary Theatre this performance explores the lives of Lavani artists associated with Sangeet Bari tradition.
Savitri Medhatul also conducts lecture demo and Lavani workshops along with other Sangeet Bari teams members. They have presented their work with Lavani artists at Kamla Raheja Institute of architecture, Sophia College, Mumbai University, IIT Mumbai, National School of Drama Delhi, Music Academy Chennai, and University College of London.
Savitri directed and produced her first documentary film on Lavani Dancers (women folk dancers from Maharashtra, India) called Natale Tumchyasathi…Behind the Adorned Veil in 2008. She has also collaborated on various national and international projects.
Her work touches upon varied topics such as farmer suicides, Water distribution in city of Mumbai, Bene Israeli (Jewish community from Maharashtra), Rickshaw drivers in Mumbai and more.
She collaborated with Dr. Mathew Gandi from University College of London for a film project on water distribution and its issues in Mumbai called ‘Liquid City’.
During 2012-14 Savitri received a two-year fellowship from Social Science Research Council, New York for research and making video projects on Pentecostal Christians in Mumbai.
